To be a model is not about being beautiful, it is more about being a role model, it is an attitude, it is to be the one people want to be, or to have. To be a model requires projecting an image, but as we know, image is not something that can be created as such because the image is just projected, but the perception will change depending on the spectator. What people don’t really think about is that a model can be any age, race or gender, and it will always depend on the requirements of the clients for whatever campaign the image will be used for.

Fashion Modeling:

1. Do you have what it takes? Being realistic is necessary from the very beginning; do you have fit the standard looks of commercial beauty? Do you have the face? Do you have the body? Do you have the personality? Do you have?

2. Understand your place: unless you are a well established brand name in the industry, a photo or video of you (Face, body or both) is destined to sell a product, a service or an idea. A model has to understand that the star is the product and the model roll is to sell it. In fashion, the hierarchy goes like this: Designer, Editor, Art director, Creative Director, Photographer, Stylist, Hair and Makeup, and at the very bottom is the model, the model is like the canvas of the painter or the guitar of the musician.

3. Self Confidence: a model without the looks but with the right attitude can do better that the one with the right face and body but without the attitude. Self Confidence is a must. I personally believe that the best picture is the one that is taken a frame before and few frames after the models pose, however most of the job to look good might fall on the photographer.

4. Connect: Photographers and models have to have a connection, without it there is much potential that is lost. Again most of this falls on the hands of the photographer, but it is always teamwork. See it as dancing a waltz, the photographer leads, but the model has to know how to follow and add “decoration”, color and beauty to the performance.
